I've believed for a while in the strategy of becoming your own competitor. Think, "if I wanted to create a new brand to compete with my company's brand, what would I do?" And then do it.
This article agrees with what I've come to understand: it's not talent that makes you great at something, it's continual adaptation and improvement. What I would add is that it's not just about innovation, it's about using innovations that give you increased feedback on the success rate of each facet of what you do, and how changes in any aspect of your approach affect performance.

I'm fascinated by the methods and strategies that people employ that lead them to success, and I'm convinced that there are some common factors that anyone can use. Here's my latest take on getting where you want to go, based on my own successes and failures.
Another good article by Joel Spolksy, who writes that he's getting his four interns--three developers along with an intern in marketing--to do an entire product from start to finish. I think it's a great idea.

I've often found myself telling individuals to run it like a business - whether it's a small venture or a small business, or even a not-for-profit organization.
However it seems we need to clear up what this really means.
